Sales development representative job description: UK template

An SDR is measured on qualified meetings, not closed deals. The job description should say who they contact, who gets the meetings and how pay is made up.

In short

A sales development representative finds potential customers, contacts them by phone, email and LinkedIn, qualifies the ones who respond, and books meetings for an account executive or the business owner to close. A good SDR job description says who the SDR will contact, how success is measured, who they hand over to, and how pay is made up. Copy the template below, fill in the square brackets, and cut anything that does not apply to your business. If you would rather not recruit, lead generation support can take over the outreach this role would do.

Part 2

What does a sales development representative do?

What is an SDR?

An SDR works at the start of the sales process. They research prospects, start conversations, ask qualifying questions and book meetings, then hand those meetings to the person who sells. They are measured on qualified meetings and pipeline, not on closed deals. For the full explanation of the role, see our guide on what an SDR is; for the difference from a business development representative, see SDR vs BDR.

Where an SDR sits in the sales team

In a larger company, SDRs sit between marketing and the account executives (AEs). Marketing brings in leads, SDRs qualify them and find new ones, and AEs close. An SDR manager, if there is one, sets targets and coaches. In a small UK business the SDR often reports to the owner and books meetings straight into the owner's diary. Your job description should say which of these is true, because it changes who applies.

Part 4

Adapting the template to your SDR role

Job summary

Candidates decide in the first few lines. Replace "[type of business]" with something concrete, such as "independent dental practices in the North West" or "UK manufacturers with their own field sales team". Say whether the role is inbound, outbound or both. A precise summary attracts people who want that work and puts off people who do not.

Key responsibilities

Cut any line that is not part of the job. If you have no inbound leads, delete the inbound bullet and make the outbound bullets fuller. If the SDR will also run LinkedIn outreach, say so; our guide on LinkedIn outreach message templates shows the kind of messages they will send. Keep the TPS and CTPS line: the ICO's business-to-business marketing guidance says live marketing calls must not go to numbers registered with the TPS or CTPS without consent, and callers must identify themselves and display a number. This is general information, not legal advice.

Targets

Write the target as qualified meetings held, not calls made or meetings booked. Meetings that never happen cost the seller time and teach the SDR the wrong habit. If you are hiring your first SDR and do not know what a realistic number is, say that targets will be set together after the first few weeks, then base them on what the role actually produces.

Skills and requirements

Keep the essential list short. Most of what makes a good SDR is behaviour (persistence, listening, organisation), not qualifications. The National Careers Service sales representative job profile lists several routes into sales work, including a degree, an apprenticeship, working your way up and applying directly, so a degree requirement will narrow your pool without guaranteeing a better hire. Use the desirable list for sector knowledge and tools, which can be taught.

Pay and working hours

State the basic salary and the OTE as two separate figures, and say what the commission or bonus is paid on. Candidates compare adverts on both numbers, and a single "up to" figure without a basic reads as a warning sign. For hours, the National Careers Service profiles give typical hours of 37 to 45 a week for sales representatives and 37 to 40 a week for business development managers; state your own hours and your days exactly.

Part 5

How much does an SDR earn in the UK?

There is no official UK salary figure for SDRs. The closest official reference points are the National Careers Service profiles for two related roles:

  • Sales representative: a typical starting salary of £23,000 and £50,000 when experienced, according to the National Careers Service sales representative job profile, which also notes that advertised pay may include on-target earnings.
  • Business development manager: £28,000 as a starter and £80,000 when experienced, according to the National Careers Service business development manager job profile.

Neither is an SDR profile, and a business development manager is usually more senior than an SDR, so use them as context, not as a salary for the role. To set your own figure, look at current UK SDR adverts in your area and sector, note the basic and OTE separately, and decide where your role sits.

Range chart: sales representative £23,000 to £50,000, business development manager £28,000 to £80,000
Official pay for two related roles, as context rather than an SDR salary.

Basic pay and on-target earnings

OTE is the basic salary plus the commission or bonus an SDR earns if they hit target. Decide three things before you advertise: what the bonus is paid on (qualified meetings held is the usual choice for an SDR), how often it is paid, and whether there is a cap. Write all three into your offer letter.

Part 6

SDR career path

Next roles after SDR

The usual next step is account executive, where the person runs the sales conversations they used to book. Other routes include senior SDR, SDR team lead or manager, account management, and moves into marketing. Naming the next step in your job description helps you attract ambitious candidates.

Getting promoted

SDRs get promoted by hitting target consistently, writing handovers that AEs trust, and showing they can run a sales conversation. As an employer, say what "ready for promotion" looks like in your business and review it at fixed points, so good SDRs stay instead of leaving to get the step elsewhere.

Part 7

Hiring in-house or outsourcing the role

In-house versus managed team costs

A job description is the start of a hire, and the hire costs more than the salary. Add employer National Insurance, pension, holiday, recruitment, equipment, tools, training and your own time managing the role, plus the risk that the person leaves or does not work out. Outsourcing makes sense when you need outreach running soon, have nobody to coach a new SDR, or want to test outbound before a permanent hire. Our guide to how to hire a VA for lead generation walks through the choice, and the virtual sales assistant guide covers a wider sales support role.

Using an outsourced SDR

At Ant Assist your SDR is one dedicated VA, never shared. They are UK-managed and work full time from our own managed office in Cairo, where they are recruited, managed and supervised; they are not freelancers and not AI. They work UK business hours, 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, from 20 hours a week up to a full 40-hour VA, and can work from the job description you write. If the fit is wrong, we replace the VA without restart cost. They work in your own CRM and accounts, under NDAs and data-processing agreements, with password managers and access you can revoke. If the work you need is wider than one role, our lead generation VA service is the place to start.

The introductory rate is £5 per hour for the first 6 months on the Entry tier (3 months on Mid, 1 month on Expert). After that, lead generation Entry is £5.50 per hour full time (£880 a month for 160 hours) or £6.50 per hour part time (£520 a month for 80 hours). Compare it with your in-house costs in the calculator.

FAQ

Questions about hiring an SDR

Usually, yes. Many SDRs are in their first sales job, coming from customer service, retail, hospitality or recruitment. Employers tend to hire for communication, persistence and organisation, then train the product and process.

It can be. Most outreach ends without a meeting, targets are visible and the work is repetitive. Clear targets, good lists, regular coaching and a manager who celebrates qualified meetings make a large difference to how stressful the role feels.

There is no standard length. Most employers run a structured onboarding on the product, the customer and the CRM, then coach on live calls for the first few months. State what your training looks like in the job description, because candidates new to sales look for it.

For people who enjoy talking to strangers and want to move into sales, it is a common and well-trodden starting point. It teaches prospecting, qualifying and objection handling, which every later sales role uses. The best SDR roles name a clear next step and say how to reach it.

For most SDRs it is the rejection: most outreach gets no reply or a "no", every day. Keeping energy and quality up across a long run of calls is the real skill. Employers help by giving good lists, realistic targets and regular feedback.

Apply directly for entry-level SDR roles, or move across from customer service, retail, hospitality or recruitment. Employers look for confident communication, persistence and organisation more than formal qualifications. Be ready to role-play a short call in the interview.
