In short

Cold calling is an unsolicited phone call to a prospect who has had no previous contact with your business, made to open a sales conversation, usually to book a meeting or a demo. In B2B it means calling a named decision-maker at a company you have chosen to target. In the UK it is legal for most live sales calls, provided you screen numbers against the right registers and follow the rules for every call. If you would rather not make the calls yourself, [lead generation support](https://ant-assist.com/services/lead-generation/) can take that work on.

## What cold calling means

Cold calling is phoning a prospect who has never heard of you, rather than waiting for them to find you. The word "cold" describes the relationship, not the tone of the call. A cold prospect has not filled in a form, downloaded a guide, met you at an event or been referred. You are the first contact. Everything that follows, the opener, the questions, the request for a meeting, has to work without any goodwill built up beforehand.

If you are weighing up whether to run calls yourself or hand them to a managed team, our [outsourced cold calling](https://ant-assist.com/services/lead-generation/outsourced-cold-calling/) page explains what changes when a dedicated caller does it for you, and how that service works.

### Cold calling in sales and B2B

In sales, cold calling is one of the oldest forms of outbound prospecting: you pick the people you want to sell to and contact them first, rather than waiting for them to find you. In B2B, the target is a role inside a business: an operations director, a practice manager, the owner of a firm of a certain size in a certain area. The goal of the first call is rarely to sell. It is to find out whether there is a problem worth solving and, if there is, to agree a next step.

Consumer cold calling, phoning households to sell to individuals, is the source of most of the nuisance calls people complain about. This guide is about B2B calling.

### Cold calling versus warm calling

A warm call goes to someone who already knows who you are: they downloaded something, replied to an email, met you at a trade show, or were introduced by a mutual contact. A cold call goes to someone who has never heard of you. The skills overlap, but a warm call can start with the shared context ("you downloaded our guide last week"), while a cold call has to earn the right to continue in the opening seconds.

Cold describes the relationship, not the tone of the call.

Many teams now warm a list up before calling it, with a connection request on LinkedIn or a short email first. Strictly, that turns some cold calls into lukewarm ones, and it often makes them easier.

### Cold call examples

**Example 1.** A commercial cleaning company in Leeds builds a list of office managers at firms with offices in the city centre. The caller rings one, introduces themselves and the company, says they are calling because the firm's lease cycle often brings a review of contracts, and asks whether cleaning is something the office manager looks after. If it is, the caller asks two questions about the current arrangement and offers a short site visit.

**Example 2.** A software company selling to dental practices calls practice managers. The caller opens with who they are, says they work with practices on appointment reminders, and asks how the practice handles missed appointments today. The aim of the call is a short demo booked in the practice manager's diary.

Both examples are illustrations, not real clients. In both, the caller has a reason for calling that relates to the prospect's world, asks before pitching, and asks for one small next step.

## How a cold call works

Most B2B cold calls follow six stages, whoever makes them: preparation, the opener, discovery questions, handling objections, agreeing the next step and recording the call in the CRM.

### Stages of a call

1. **Preparation.**: Before dialling: a clean list, a reason to call each person, and one goal for the call.
2. **The opener.**: Who you are, where you are calling from and why you are calling them in particular. This is where most calls are won or lost.
3. **Discovery.**: A few short questions to find out whether the problem you solve is a problem they have.
4. **Handling objections.** "Send me an email", "we already have someone", "not now". Each needs a calm, honest reply.
5. **The next step.**: A booked meeting, a call-back at an agreed time, or a clear no.
6. **The record.**: Notes in the CRM straight after the call, so the next contact starts from what was said.

The six stages most B2B cold calls follow.

### Scripts, openers and objections

A script is a structure to follow, not a speech to read. The best ones give the caller a clear opener, three or four discovery questions and short answers to the objections that come up most. Our guide to [cold calling tips](https://ant-assist.com/resources/cold-calling-tips/) includes a script skeleton, objection replies and a voicemail you can adapt.

## UK calling rules in brief

Most live B2B sales calls are legal. The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) explains that most live marketing calls do not need the person's consent, but you must screen the numbers against the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) and the Corporate Telephone Preference Service (CTPS) first, say who is calling and display your number. In B2B the trap is that sole traders and some partnerships count as individuals, so a "business" number can sit on the TPS. The full B2B picture, with a pre-call checklist, is in our guide [is cold calling legal in the UK](https://ant-assist.com/resources/is-cold-calling-legal-uk/). The ICO's guidance is [What are the rules on live direct marketing calls?](https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/direct-marketing-and-privacy-and-electronic-communications/guidance-on-direct-marketing-using-live-calls/what-are-the-rules-on-live-direct-marketing-calls/). This is general information, not legal advice.

## Does cold calling still work?

Cold calling still works for many B2B teams, but it is harder than it was. Fewer people pick up calls from numbers they do not know, decision-makers are busier, and buyers often do some research before they speak to anyone. Against that, a phone conversation remains one of the quickest ways to find out whether someone has a real need, and it is harder to ignore than an email.

Published figures for cold calling success rates come almost entirely from vendors that sell calling data or software, and they define "success" in different ways. We set out what the named studies report, and how to measure your own rate, in [cold calling success rates](https://ant-assist.com/resources/cold-calling-success-rates/). The wider argument, with the evidence on both sides, is in [is cold calling dead](https://ant-assist.com/resources/is-cold-calling-dead/).

### Why it is hard

Most calls end without a conversation: no answer, a gatekeeper, a voicemail. Most conversations end without a meeting. That is the nature of the work, and it is why cold calling depends on volume, a good list and steady habits more than on any single clever line. It is also why many owners who try it themselves stop after a few weeks: the calls compete with everything else in the day, and they always lose.

Part 6

## Other ways to reach new prospects

The main alternatives to cold calling are cold email, LinkedIn outreach, inbound methods such as search and content, and referrals from clients and partners. Cold calling is one outbound channel among several. If it does not suit your market or your team, or you want to combine it with something else, these are the usual options. The comparison of outbound and inbound approaches, with where a VA fits, is in our guide to [inbound vs outbound lead generation](https://ant-assist.com/resources/inbound-vs-outbound-lead-generation/).

### Email and LinkedIn outreach

Cold email reaches more people for the same time, and a short, specific message can open the door for a call later. LinkedIn lets you find the right person by role, see their background, and connect before you contact them. Many B2B teams now use all three together: a connection request, a message, then a call to the people who engaged. Our [LinkedIn lead generation strategy](https://ant-assist.com/resources/linkedin-lead-generation-strategy/) guide covers that channel in detail.

### Inbound and referrals

Inbound means being found: search, content, a useful website, reviews. It is slower to build and cheaper per lead once it works. Referrals from existing clients and partners are usually the warmest leads you will ever get, and asking for them is a habit most small firms underuse. Neither replaces outbound if you need meetings this quarter, but both reduce how many cold calls you need.

Part 7

## Working as a cold caller

Working as a cold caller means making calls from a prospect list, handling rejection and booking meetings, a job that is hard in specific ways but gets easier with a good list and coaching.

### What a cold caller does

A cold caller, often called a sales development representative (SDR), business development representative or telemarketer depending on the business, works through a list of prospects, makes the calls, handles the first objections, books meetings for a salesperson or the owner, and keeps the CRM up to date. In many teams the same person also researches the list, sends follow-up emails and LinkedIn messages, and reports weekly on calls made, conversations held and meetings booked. Our guide [what is an SDR](https://ant-assist.com/resources/what-is-an-sdr/) sets out the role in full.

### Is cold calling a hard job?

Yes, in specific ways. Rejection is constant and rarely personal. The work is repetitive, and the results come in slowly and unevenly, so motivation has to come from habits and small daily targets rather than from each call. The people who do well tend to be curious, organised and resilient, prepare properly, and treat each "no" as information. It gets easier with a good list, a clear script, and someone who reviews calls and coaches.

Part 8

## Outsourcing the calls

Outsourcing makes sense when calls are not getting made in-house, when you need a steady weekly volume, or when hiring and managing an in-house caller would cost more than the meetings are worth to you. You remain responsible for the rules on who is called, so agree screening, records and do-not-call handling with any provider before the first dial.

### Questions to ask a provider

Ask who the caller is and whether they are dedicated to you, who supervises them, how calls are recorded in your CRM, how they screen numbers, how they report results, and what happens if the fit is wrong.

### How a managed team runs it

At Ant Assist a [lead generation VA](https://ant-assist.com/services/lead-generation/) is one dedicated person, never shared, working full time from our own managed office in Cairo, recruited, managed and supervised there, on UK business hours, 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday. They are not freelancers and not AI. You can start at 20 hours a week or take a full 40-hour VA. If the fit is wrong, we replace the VA without restart cost. Access is through password managers and can be revoked at any time, under NDAs and data-processing agreements.

The rate is £5 per hour for the first 6 months on the Entry tier (3 months on Mid, 1 month on Expert). After the promotion, lead generation Entry is £5.50 per hour full time (£880 a month for 160 hours) or £6.50 per hour part time (£520 a month for 80 hours). Put your own hours into the [calculator](https://ant-assist.com/calculator/) to compare that with an in-house hire.

FAQ

## Cold calling FAQs

### Why is cold calling important?

It lets you choose who you speak to, instead of waiting for the right buyers to find you. A live conversation also tells you quickly whether a prospect has a real need, and what stops them buying, which is useful even when the answer is no.

### What is a dialler for cold calling?

A dialler is software that places calls from your list so the caller does not dial each number by hand. Most also log the call and its outcome in your CRM. Whatever tool you use, the screening and identification rules still apply to every call.

### What is cold calling in recruitment?

In recruitment, cold calling means phoning hiring managers at companies that are not yet clients to offer candidates or win a vacancy, or phoning potential candidates about a role they have not applied for. The same B2B rules on screening and identifying yourself apply to calls made for marketing purposes.

### What is cold calling in real estate?

For estate and letting agents it usually means calling property owners who have not asked to be contacted, to win instructions. Owners are often individuals whose numbers may be on the TPS, so screen every number before you call.

### What is the best cold calling script?

The best script is short, specific to the person you are calling and easy to say out loud. It covers who you are, why you are calling them, a few questions and one clear next step. Our cold calling tips guide includes a skeleton you can adapt.
